A LOCAL AND GLOBAL CRISIS
Human trafficking is a global crisis impacting millions of lives every year, with over 25 million individuals trafficked worldwide. These staggering figures highlight the urgency of our mission at Hope Arise. Through raising awareness, providing education, and supporting survivors, we strive to break the cycle of trafficking and create lasting change.
A peer-reviewed, empirical research study conducted in 2019 in the state of Hawaii by the Office of Sex Trafficking Intervention Research at Arizona State University and the Child & Family Service of Hawaii revealed the following information on the sex trafficking issue in the state of Hawaii:
- Out of 363 participants in the survey study, 26.7% identified as sex trafficking victims.
- 64% of the sex trafficking victims were native or part native Hawaiians.
- The age of the first sex trafficking experience ranged from 4 years old to 55 years-old.
- The average age of sex trafficking victimization before the age of 18 was 11.3 years old.
- 75% of the sex trafficking victims identified as female.
- 69% had experienced homelessness and were more likely to report domestic violence, sexual abuse and emotional abuse in childhood.
- Sex trafficking victims suffer from mental health diagnosis more than those non-sex trafficked.
